Patočka Memorial Lecture, April 25, 2018 by Lord Robert Skidelsky Großer Sendesaal "Will the Human Race Become Redundant? What History and Economics can Tell us About the Impact of Automation on Work" Ever since the advent of machinery, work has been associated with wage labour. Machinery brought promise of both higher wages and redundancy. What do economics and history tell us about the fate of these promises? With the spread of automation the dialectic between work and redundancy may be reaching a point of resolution. What form will it take? Will we see the total or partial replacement of human by machine labour? Or will there be new hybrid forms of work which combine work and leisure? What would be the policy implications of different work futures. Lord Robert Skidelsky is Emeritus...

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the conference convened by the victorious powers of the Napoleonic Wars and the earlier French Revolutionary Wars, which had devastated so much of Europe over the last 25 years. The powers aimed to create a long lasting peace, partly by redrawing the map to restore old boundaries and partly by balancing the powers so that none would risk war again. It has since been seen as a very conservative outcome, reasserting the old monarchical and imperial orders over the growth of liberalism and national independence movements, and yet also largely successful in its goal of preventing war in Europe on such a scale for another 100 years. Delegates to Vienna were entertained at night with lavish balls, and the image above is from a French cartoon showing Russia, Prussi...
Dr. Manolis Paraschos, journalism historian at Emerson College, discusses the history of Vienna’s dynamic and wealthy Greek community of the 18th and 19th centuries and how this community saw it as its patriotic duty to keep the enslaved mainland Greeks educated. Despite opposition by the Ottoman government, Vienna soon became a publishing center for expatriate Greeks and attracted some of the biggest names of those who planned the 1821 Greek Revolution against Turkey. The first four Greek newspapers and two magazines were published in Vienna starting in 1790. The first newspaper in mainland Greece was started in Kalamata in 1821. Dr. Paraschos presents an authentic copy of one of these first Greek newspapers, as well as other original British and American newspapers of the time. Rhea Les...
